About me
Hello, I'm Alex
I help build better places, communities and organisations through creative collaboration.
Sustainability and regeneration are a big focus of my work – not because I’m a technical expert, but because I’m interested in stripping away unnecessary complexity, using story to shape what’s possible, thinking in systems, and leading from our connection to the living world.
Over the last twenty years I’ve put these ideas into practice in many settings: working with sustainability teams at AstraZeneca, Shell and the University of Suffolk, running a regional funding programme for community climate action, and co-authoring an academic paper on facilitating intelligent networks.
Twelve years ago I had the good Fortune of meeting Dave Hall at one of his creative thinking workshops and then working with him at The Ideas Centre. It changed the course of my life – teaching me how to facilitate creative group work and speak to large audiences.
Another thread running through everything I do is improvisation. I’m the founder of Playback Theatre and improv comedy school Here & Now People. Improv has taught me that the best conversations, ideas and relationships emerge when people are able to listen well, build on each other’s contributions and embrace uncertainty with curiosity rather than fear.
I find that the best things I’m involved in, and the work that as mattered most over time has a certain quality of aliveness to it. It’s hard to define – but it’s always there when people are truly present for each other, open to creativity, and taking part in something that matters to them.
I’m based in Suffolk, UK with my wife, two kids, and an unruly cat. Actually the kids are pretty unruly too.
I’m a student of nature, and when I’m not working I’m usually somewhere outdoors – in the garden, or the woods, or walking on the Suffolk coast (or maybe just down the pub).
If you’re interested in working together, I’d love to hear from you.
