Pass the clap
A group rhythm game where a clap is passed around a circle in sync.
Purpose
Builds awareness, connection and a satisfying sense of group flow.
It’s a simple activity that gently gets people out of their heads and into their bodies.
Instructions
-
Stand in a circle.
-
One person (the leader) starts by turning to the person on their right and clapping in unison with them.
-
The clap is then passed around the circle in the same way – each pair aiming to clap at exactly the same moment.
-
Keep going and get faster. Give the group some pointers about eye contact, rhythm and timing.
-
Keep going. The rhythm may build and break down—let it.
-
End when it naturally dissolves or feels complete.
Side coaching tips
-
Encourage eye contact to support synchronicity.
-
Prompt participants to notice timing, not rush it.
-
If the rhythm collapses, celebrate it—part of the fun!
Things to flag up
-
Tendency to rush—remind players to wait for the beat
-
People looking at hands instead of each other—coach them toward eye contact
-
Participants may laugh or break the rhythm—normalize breakdowns as part of the process
-
Some may feel awkward at first—warm tone helps everyone relax
